Cultural Note - Nota cultural
In some Latin American countries, it is the custom for a child to bear two family names: the last name is the mother’s family name and the second-to- last name is the father’s family name, which is the child’s official sur-name. So a person named José Muñoz Gómez could be called Señor Muñoz.
If a woman named María García Rivera marries José Muñoz, she drops her mother’s family name (Rivera), keeps her father’s name (García), and adds her husband’s name, usually with a de. So her married name would be Señora María García de Muñoz.
